As I walk through the store in my “Lets Talk Birth” shirt I get the question all the time “what Is a birth photographer?” which is usually followed by a “YOU DO WHAT?!” Nine times out of ten is the men who do not really understand the value of what I offer, and that is okay. Its my job to educate and show them. Once they see they are usually all about it and find it amazing. That being said I wanted to write to you all about what it is that I do, why it is so amazing and maybe give you a little insight into birth from my perspective. So I will be going over my top questions!
1. WHY HIRE A BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHER?
To me, it ranks right on up there with as much importance as your wedding day. Birth photography allows you to see and remember all the little details that you may have missed living in the moment, or that you just want to hold onto forever. The way your partner looks at you with amazement, the look on your face as baby is in your arms for the first time, and all those little things add up to being your story. Those are the things that catch my eye and tell your story. You will never get to recreate these special first moments with your newborn or the journey it took to get there. It is so powerful being able to look back on and reliving your story.
I so regret not hiring a birth photographer, and I hold on dearly to the images my husband captured of me and that I captured of him holding our kids for the first time. I think everyone should have these moments to relive.
2.HOW DOES BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY WORK?
I usually go on call for my birth clients starting at week 38, unless you are at risk for preterm labor. I have my clients contact me when they decide to head to the hospital or call their midwife to come over. I do not arrive until my clients are in active labor. If you are having cervical checks- usually once you are 6 centimeters. If you are not being checked, I come when you have an active pattern that you cant talk or walk through. I am there to document all the things that make your story unique. After baby is born I stay for 1-2 hours postpartum or until baby has been weighed and measured.
3. CAN WE MEET FIRST?
Of course! And I highly encourage it! I love to sit down with my prospective birth clients to answer any questions they may have. Its also a great way to see who I am and if I will be a good fit for your birth space.
WHAT IS YOUR PRICING AND DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?
Birth photography is an investment, but it is 100% worth it. My packages start at $1350 for birth story’s and go up to $3600 for my Hello Baby collection. I offer flexible pre and post payment plans for all of my birth packages that makes it very affordable for anyone’s budget!
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU MISS THE BIRTH?
Well, I have not missed one yet (knock on wood) but birth is unpredictable! I will make every effort to arrive within 2 hours of being called. I do have package options that include a back up photographer for emergency situations, but these are all things we can discuss during our phone consult or sit down meeting! Worst case I would arrive asap and start documenting and you would receive a portion of your collection back, and would receive a fresh 48 as well!
HOW MANY IMAGES WILL I RECEIVE?
You can expect to receive between 100-200 professionally edited images. I never guarantee a set amount because there are so many factors that go into each birth story. Home births usually yield few more images because laboring and the moments following birth are completely different than those captured in a hospital setting.
WHAT TYPE OF IMAGES CAN I EXPECT?
This really depends on you. Everyone has different wants and needs when it comes to the intimacy and privacy of their birth space. I like to send my clients a questionnaire to get a feel for the types of shots they want. Some of my favorite images are of baby’s head crowning, but I fully understand some clients do not want these images and I respect that! It is a discussion I usually have at our first meeting!
DO YOU OFFER OTHER TYPES OF SESSIONS?
YES! I offer gender reveals, maternity, fresh 48 and lifestyle newborns.
